Who I Am
Isabella Thompson is an interdisciplinary sculptor originally from Hagerstown, MD. A first-generation college graduate of William & Mary, she holds a BA in Art & Art History and is currently pursuing an MFA in Sculpture at Rinehart School of Sculpture, Maryland Institute College of Art.
She works across fiber, metal, clay, and discarded materials, often using crochet and other historically craft-associated processes to create sculptural forms. Her practice is rooted in transformation, material experimentation, and the tension between fragility and resilience. Materials that are often overlooked or dismissed are treated with the same seriousness as traditional sculptural materials, allowing them to sag, resist, accumulate, and take on new forms.
Her relationship with public art began at sixteen, when she started yarn bombing the streets around her hometown as a way to claim space and be seen. That early interest in visibility, disruption, and care continues to shape her practice today, extending from the studio into public and collaborative work. She has created and installed public art projects with the NEON Arts District in Norfolk, Virginia, and the ViBe Creative District in Virginia Beach, Virginia, as well as in Cork, Ireland, and Brussels and Ghent, Belgium. Her work has also been featured in NEON at Ten, a publication documenting the history and work of Norfolk’s NEON Arts District.
Isabella is the founder of The Fiber Art Society, a community-based organization she established in 2024 to create accessible opportunities for people to connect through fiber art. She has taught fiber art workshops at the Chrysler Museum of Art, and her work has been exhibited in Virginia, Maryland, and New York City. She currently lives and works in Baltimore, Maryland, where she continues to develop a practice connecting material experimentation, sculpture, and community-based public art.
